Individual Counselling

One person, one room, one honest conversation at a time — a private space where you can say what you cannot say anywhere else.

Overview

Individual counselling is the quiet core of recovery work. It is a confidential, unhurried space to talk about what is really happening — the drinking or using, certainly, but also the stress underneath it, the relationships it strains, and the future you would like back.

Our counsellors work at your pace. Nothing is forced into a session before you are ready to put it there, and what you say stays within the counselling relationship. For many people, this is the first place they have ever spoken about their situation without being judged.

Who this may help

  • People who want to talk through their alcohol or drug use privately, before any bigger decision.
  • Those already in recovery who need steady, ongoing support to stay the course.
  • People managing stress, low mood or life pressures that keep pulling them back to use.
  • Anyone unsure whether their situation "is serious enough" — talking once often answers that question better than worrying for months.

What it includes

  • A confidential first conversation — understanding your situation without forms, judgements or pressure.
  • Regular one-to-one sessions — a consistent time and space to work through what matters, in person at our Hiranki centre.
  • Practical coping strategies — managing cravings, triggers, stress and difficult relationships in daily life.
  • Personal recovery planning — clear, realistic next steps that you set, with support you can lean on.
  • Coordination with other services — where helpful, sessions connect with family counselling, wellness activities or the rehabilitation programme.

FAQs

Questions people ask before their first session

Will anyone find out I came for counselling?

Counselling is confidential. Your sessions, and what you discuss in them, are not shared with family, employers or anyone else. Our general privacy practices are described in the privacy policy, and the counsellor will explain exactly how confidentiality works in your first session.

What actually happens in a first session?

Mostly listening. The counsellor will ask what brings you, how things have been going, and what you would like to be different. You cannot do it wrong — there are no wrong answers, and you decide what to share and when.

Can counselling help if I am not ready to quit?

Yes. Many people begin counselling precisely because they are ambivalent. Understanding your relationship with alcohol or drugs is itself meaningful progress, and readiness tends to grow from that understanding rather than the other way round.
